The Necessity of Bookbinding

Against all the odds, books still have a great purpose in the world. Even if it is painful to see many trees dying, because of the paper mills, there is still the need for us to have books. It should be the desire for all to use recycled paper. There are also many alternatives to creating paper for the purpose of printing books.

With the printing of various kinds of writing, there is also the fascinating aspect of binding these into books. There are many different ways of binding. Handcrafted books are still reserved for the few who desire to have something special. It is interesting to follow the development of bookbinding from the beginning to where we are today.

How was this done in the Past?

The traditional way of binding books required a few basic tools. One of these is the wooden book binding equipment. This is what was used for the final stages of putting the inner pages together.

This is also known as the finishing press as you do press the pages together once they have been threaded and glued. Threading the pages together is still one of the strongest ways of binding a book. This, and the wraparound cover, adds value to the book.

More Recent Ways of Binding

The more recent ways of binding varies. For purposes of quick turnaround, digital books are perfect bound. The strength of this binding often lies in the strength of the glue. Most paperbacks are perfect bound, whereas hardcovers are bound in the more traditional way.

The importance of binding a book is the readability of the book. If it is bound in the proper way, it becomes a pleasure to turn the pages and to read its content.
